Reality tv today showcases and even glorifies bad decisions and suffering. Although katniss is going through her preparation to play in the games, percy jackson is going through an experience much like that.
In fact, i would argue that books like 1984 are less suitable for preteens than the hunger games is, because those books weren’t written with the preteen/teen audience in mind.
